There are seemingly endless stories about people (most of them famous in their own right) who were confronted by significant challenges who went to extraordinary measures to overcome them. There are as many stories — both from those people and…
People are not like trees. Okay, that’s not entirely true. People, like trees, start out as a seed, of sorts. We both grow, eventually begin to decay, and finally die. In both people and trees, complex biological processes are at…
At my house, my family knows that unless we have something else planned on Sunday afternoons, you’ll find me in the kitchen baking or cooking. That delicious-looking loaf of bread in the picture above is one of my recent creations…
Kimmie died today. She was only 24 years old. She spent 23 of her 24 years being ravaged by an incurable disease. Yet Kimmie was happy most of the time. She loved everyone. She had a zeal for life that…
I cried today. Two of my dear friends have a child who just turned 24. Her life has been one filled with an incomprehensible number of battles with health challenges. My friends have been surrounded by people who love and…

A cautionary caveat before I go any further: how a person deals with loss and suffering is deeply personal. It is up to that person alone to decide what, if anything, they’ll do with their own loss. It is also…
I’m a worrier. When I was young, anxiety set in anytime my parents were gone for even a minute longer than they said. The later they got home, the more I worried. As I got older, I worried less about…
